Starting today, Hyderabad will no longer serve as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Starting today, Hyderabad will no longer serve as the official joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. As per Section 5(1) of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad, which was previously the common capital for both states, will now undergo a transition. This section stipulates that Hyderabad will remain the common capital for a period not exceeding 10 years, effective from June 2.

Following this period, as outlined in Section 5(2) of the Act, Hyderabad will solely serve as the capital of Telangana. Andhra Pradesh, on the other hand, is yet to establish a permanent capital, with disputes over Amaravati and Visakhapatnam still unresolved in the courts. Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed intentions for Visakhapatnam to become the administrative capital, while Amaravati will house the legislature, and Kurnool will serve as the judicial capital if his administration remains in power.

Despite the bifurcation in 2014, Andhra Pradesh had ceased using Hyderabad as its capital, retaining only certain buildings in the city. Nevertheless, the latest cessation marks a symbolic but significant milestone in the ongoing separation between the two Telugu states, remarked a political observer.
